Intelligent small arms
A new type of small arms to be put into service in Afghanistan - tells the "New Scientist".
XM-25 rifle has a futuristic look. It is equipped with a laser sighting system and special exploding projectiles caliber 25 mm, which can be programmed to explode just above the target. For the first time such a solution is used in small arms with a relatively small caliber.
The soldier has to do is find an object, illuminating it with laser to assess the distance and pull the trigger. Missile explodes in a designated distance, with an accuracy to 2-3 meters. This allows you to effectively shoot the enemy behind the wall or in a trench without the need to call for air support (and use of aviation is often associated with mistakes and civilian casualties).
